Research Projects
The Division of Gastroenterology at St. Michael's Hospital is involved
in basic (laboratory) and applied research (involving patients) examining
molecular mechanisms of disease, new technologies for diagnosis and treatment
and new pharmacologic treatment strategies. Our faculty members have received
funding from a variety of sources, including the Canadian Institutes for
Health Research (CIHR) and Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC).
Listed here are some examples of our research activities:
- Molecular mechanisms of gastrointestinal cancer (Kim)
- Ethical issues in gastroenterology research (Ottaway)
- Novel imaging techniques to detect early gastrointestinal cancers (Marcon)
- The role of capsule and balloon enteroscopy in detection of occult
bleeding (Marcon)
- Nutrition and cytokines in inflammatory conditions of the gut (Jeejeebhoy)
- Endoscopic mucosal resection of early esophageal and gastric cancers
(Marcon, Kortan, Kandel)
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Novel therapies (Baker, Irvine, Jeejeebhoy)
- Epidemiology, outcomes and quality of life (Irvine)
- Functional gastrointestinal disorders (Irvine)
